The first of every month is holy to Janus and Hera (Juno). Offerings are made to them are made on this day.

August 1st is also the anniversary of the Temple of Elpis (Spes in Latin), the Goddess of Hope, which dates back to the 4th century BCE. Like many other deities, Spes personifies a specific virtue. In this case, She is also one of the virtues of the imperial cult as Spes Augusta, or “imperial hope.” Here She represented the emperor’s virtue to bring about good fortune and a beneficial future for the empire.
